It will only be a few years before Jay Leno steps out of the spotlight on The Tonight Show and leaves the reins to Conan O’Brien. The day can’t come soon enough. Last night, the part of the public that’s asleep before Conan makes it to the NBC airwaves got a chance to see the genius at work, as he hosted the Emmy Awards. Though I didn’t watch the show, I can safely say that one of the highlights was Conan’s opening montage. He stumbles into the plots of Lost, The Office, House, 24, and Dateline‘s “To Catch a Predator” series. It’s smart, funny, and time-appropriate, something you don’t always see in the opening monologues of awards shows. The whole thing is reminiscent of the opening to the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, featuring Justin Timberlake and Sean William Scott.
And, of course, one can never link to a video that features Conan without bringing up the Walker, Texas Ranger clips. You can see two of them here, and the perhaps the ultimate online video clip ever here. Apologies for these two links, as they aren’t YouTube videos and may take a while to load and/or have questionable page content.

He caught some flack for it too, because of a plane crash the same day. I don’t think people realize that it was filmed ahead of time.
Hey man, do you think you could link to my site in your blogroll? If not, that’s cool.
Something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, but got bumped because of the move to WordPress. Consider it done. I’ll probably use tomorrow’s post to update the blogroll, at which point you’ll get an official mention.
…Me too? If not, it’s cool, but I have to ask.
Yes, ‘Whatever’ will be on the new ‘roll. Just wait ’till tomorrow, and you shall see it in all its glory. Some links will even be dumped, so it’ll be easier to find the good stuff.
Oh shoot, who’s getting demoted?!?!?! :)
Not demoted per se – Shallow Center, regrettably, is on a hiatus of undetermined length, so I’m gonna remove him from the roll and write a glowing return post when he decides to blog again. Chasing Adventure doesn’t write often enough…stuff like that. Don’t worry, you’ve been on the roll for an hour. You’re staying.
I appreciate the link, and you’ve been added to my list. [I would have added your livejournal site, but I couldn't understand the thing...at 33, I'm kinda old you know...this site is much more easy on the clouded eyes]
Amen there, Goyne. It’s part of why I left LJ anyway.
I love how this little post has been fodder for people making sure they’re on my blogroll. Makes me feel influential or something.
So easily one of the best lines of the Emmy telecast was the following:
“I lost to Barry MANILOW!!!!”
–Steven Colbert after losing the Best Individual Performance in a Variety, Comedy or Musical Show to aforementioned Barry Manilow, who filmed one of his Vegas shows for a PBS member drive.
One of the worst moments, I’m sorry, was seeing Project Runway losing to the freaking Amazing Race. I know you like that show and all, but PR is just so much better.
“Race” shouldn’t have won, as the past two seasons have been less than the extraordinary show I’ve come to expect. I don’t watch PR, but I don’t doubt it was better than “Race: Family Edition.”
